If your dentist says you need a crown, one of the first questions is usually about timing. Can it be done in one visit, or will you need a temporary crown while a lab makes the final one?

Both options can be good choices. The right fit depends on the tooth, where it is in your mouth, how much tooth structure is left, your bite, your cosmetic goals, and what your dentist can safely recommend after examining the area. The goal is not to choose the fastest option. The goal is to protect the tooth with a crown that fits well, feels comfortable, and holds up for everyday chewing.

What a dental crown does

A crown covers and protects a tooth that has been weakened, cracked, worn down, heavily filled, or treated with certain procedures. You can think of it as a custom cover for the part of the tooth you see above the gumline.

A crown may be recommended when a filling would not give the tooth enough support. It may also be used to restore shape, protect a tooth after damage, or improve the way a tooth functions when you bite and chew.

How CEREC same-day crowns work

CEREC crowns use digital technology to design and create a crown in the dental office. In many cases, that means the tooth can be prepared, scanned, designed, milled, adjusted, and placed during one appointment.

That can be helpful for patients who want to avoid a temporary crown or a second visit. It can also reduce the waiting time between preparing the tooth and receiving the final restoration.

Same-day does not mean rushed. The dentist still needs to check the fit, bite, contact with neighboring teeth, and appearance before the crown is placed. If something about the tooth or case needs a different approach, your dentist may recommend a lab-made crown instead.

How lab crowns work

A lab crown is made outside the office by a dental laboratory. The dentist prepares the tooth and takes a scan or impression. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the lab creates the final crown. At a later visit, the temporary crown is removed and the finished crown is checked, adjusted, and cemented.

Lab-made crowns can be a strong option for certain cosmetic cases, complex bite situations, or teeth that need a specific material or shading process. They also give the lab team time to customize details when appearance is a major part of the plan.

What patients usually compare

The biggest difference patients notice is convenience. CEREC may allow the crown to be completed in one visit. A lab crown usually takes at least two visits.

Temporary crowns are another difference. With a lab crown, you typically wear a temporary crown while the final one is made. Temporary crowns are useful, but they are not meant to be long-term. You may need to avoid sticky or hard foods until the permanent crown is placed.

Appearance can matter too. Both same-day and lab crowns can look natural when planned well. For highly visible front teeth, complex color matching, or a case involving several teeth, your dentist may talk through which option gives the best cosmetic control.

Durability depends on more than the crown type

Patients often ask which crown lasts longer. The honest answer is that longevity depends on the whole situation. Material, fit, bite pressure, grinding or clenching, oral hygiene, decay risk, and regular dental visits all matter.

A well-made crown still needs care. Brush and floss around it, keep up with cleanings, and tell your dentist if the bite feels high, food catches around the crown, or the area becomes sensitive.

Questions to ask before choosing

Before treatment, ask which crown option is recommended for your tooth and why. You can also ask whether a temporary crown would be needed, how long the appointment may take, what material will be used, and what to expect after the crown is placed.

If you grind your teeth, have a strong bite, or have had crown problems before, mention that during the visit. Those details can affect the treatment plan.

    5. Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
    6. Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
    7. Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

    Browser and assistive technology compatibility

    We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible.
